What U.S. Travelers Need to Know

The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital travel requirement for visa-exempt travelers, including U.S. passport holders, visiting the U.K. for short stays. It’s similar to systems already used in other destinations, like Australia or the upcoming ETIAS for Europe.

An ETA is not a visa—it’s a pre-travel authorization that allows you to board your flight and enter the U.K.

Who Needs an ETA?

If you are:

  • A U.S. citizen

  • Traveling to the U.K. for tourism, business, or visiting friends/family

  • Staying six months or less

👉 You will need an approved ETA before traveling.

This applies whether you’re flying directly into the U.K. or transiting through a U.K. airport (in many cases).

When Do You Need to Apply?

You should apply for your ETA before your trip, ideally as soon as flights are booked. While approvals are often quick, I always recommend applying well in advance to avoid last-minute stress.

Airlines will check for an approved ETA before allowing you to board your flight.

How Long Is the ETA Valid?

Once approved, the U.K. ETA:

  • Is typically valid for multiple visits

  • Covers travel over a two-year period (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first)

That means if you’re planning more than one U.K. trip, you may already be covered.

How Do You Apply?

The ETA application is completed online and requires:

  • A valid U.S. passport

  • A digital photo

  • Basic personal and travel information

  • A small application fee

As your travel advisor, I’m happy to walk you through the process or confirm whether your ETA is already in place for upcoming travel.

Why This Matters

The biggest takeaway? This is now a required step for U.S. travelers visiting the U.K. Forgetting to apply could mean being denied boarding at the airport.

I keep track of these entry requirement changes so you don’t have to—and I’ll always flag anything that could impact your trip before you travel.
